THE EMBER DAYS - Biography 2008The past year has certainly been busy for The Ember Days. From releasing their debut album on a New Zealand tour, to an extensive three month tour of the United States, playing alongside Showbread & The Glorious Unseen as well as six music festivals, they sure have come a long way from writing songs on acoustic guitars in the lounge.
When The Ember Days released their debut album “Your Eyes Light Up”, it was as if they had come out of nowhere. Their approach was to craft their sound and vision before thinking about playing shows or building a fan base. With three lead singers, four songwriters and a huge range of influences ranging from Sigur Rós to Thrice, their aim to create a cohesive, ambient, heavy, pop/rock band seemed to be a near impossible task.
The band was first a vision for Jason Belcher (vocals/guitar). He and his wife Janell Belcher (vocals/keyboard) moved from Chicago, USA to Auckland, New Zealand to begin assembling the rest of the group. Tim Peters (bass) was first to join, followed by Elliot Norton (vocals/guitar). Without an official drummer, they began writing and recording songs for their first album. It wasn’t until after the album was completed that Joel Bremner finally joined the band on drums.
One year later, now with a full line up and a new album, The Ember Days were ready to share their music with the world. “Your Eyes Light Up” is a captivating album that moves effortlessly between epic ambient sounds, driving guitars and melodic piano pieces. At the center of it all, you can really hear the heart of the band through each song. “We are five people that passionately love God, we love people, we want to speak the truth and see the body of Christ united. We play songs that reflect that and we try to bring inspiration, hope and love to anyone who listens”.
Their name itself came as a winning result in a “paper scissors rock” game at their first ever show together. They then went on to tour New Zealand, playing at pubs, churches, a ferry, an airplane hanger and an old movie theatre. They have since played at music festivals such as The Show ’07, Samstock ‘07, In His Honour ‘07, Parachute ‘08, Cornerstone ‘08 (US) and Spirit West Coast ‘08 US).
It doesn’t look like The Ember Days will be slowing down anytime soon. They already have plans to record a second album, future NZ & US tours and mission trips to India, South Africa and China. Who knows what this next year will hold for The Ember Days.
