MORTIFICATION - "Scrolls Of The Megilloth"

Death metal was always considered one of the most extreme musical genres ever to emerge. The crushing, powerful sound was usually associated with a harsh, hateful message, concentrating purely on destruction and negativity. However, not all death metal bands fall under this category. For over seventeen years Mortification has successfully been using extreme music as a way to promote noble Christian values and spread the Word of Christ among the listeners. As much loved as hated on the secular (non-Christian) metal scene, the band keeps up the fight to deliver a powerful and positive message with the help of prime quality metal music. And even though stylistically the group went through multiple changes, they remained loyal to their mission and prove that Christian metal can easily compete with the finest secular metal releases.

“Scrolls of Megilloth”, Mortification’s second full length release saw the light of day in 1992, a year after their self-titled debut. The album continued to mix thrash with death metal, this time, however, concentrating more on the latter. This resulted in putting out one of Mortification’s best LPs, to this day considered a cult classic by the fans. It was the band’s first release under the flag of Nuclear Blast, therefore the entire group worked extra-hard to make it an impressive effort. And such was the album – impressive. The mixture of various metal elements was a clear development of the potential shown on the debut record. As Steve Rowe admits himself: “’Scrolls…’ is what it is and I am so glad it was ahead of its time. It is not just a death/grind album but has elements of black metal with the screeching vocals and power metal.”

The album definitely strengthened the group’s position on the metal market and begun luring secular fans as well. Many of them claim that “Scrolls of the Megilloth” is the best offering in Mortification’s entire discography. While this may be argued, one thing is certain – it is one of the best LPs released during the band’s “death metal” years.
