Hello friends,

this is Tobe (pronounced Toby), owner and chief editor of BANDSONFIRE.COM – full name Tobias Reiss (pronounced Rice). I live in Nuremberg, Germany and in July of this year I will turn 27. As most of you know, I’ve been running this website since 2005 completely by myself. For the last five years I was responsible for everything you saw or read on this website, and for more than six years I have made it my first priority to not only keep this website online, but to also have it grow as much as it was humanly possible for me.

In this timeframe I have sacrificed a lot for the site and because of the time that it required to keep BandsOnFire growing, I did not go the standard way of apprenticeship or studying. Instead of going for a full-time job or full-time study, I put all my focus on building up BandsOnFire and worked part-time jobs, very similar to how many touring bands do it, only with the difference that I couldn’t meet any people on the road like these bands that I was promoting did. Trusting that my work with BandsOnFire would help you all in your personal lives, I put all my money and time into the work for the site throughout these years.

If you remember my status update from October 2009, it was necessary at this point – not to say ’long overdue’ – to find a new webmaster to get to the next level with BandsOnFire on the technical side. Even though I have since then found a very qualified and dedicated helper, it was not yet possible to make the progress towards the re-launch of the site that was needed. The plan was originally to present you now a completely new designed and new structured site, to show what you can expect from BandsOnFire in the future – but unfortunately this couldn’t be realized and was beyond my control. Because of this situation I’m now looking for a new front-end web developer that is not only ’on fire’, but can also invest time working on the site with me immediately and on a long-term basis. If you feel like you are this person, or know someone to be qualified for this, please contact me!

Writing the year 2010 now, I’m at a point you could very well call „at the end of my rope“. I have tried my very best to bear the financial burden of running BandsOnFire, always putting the intention to serve you all with the site as my first priority, and trying to keep the site as up-to-date as possible. Throughout the years I’ve had financial expenses that can be equated with education expenses the majority of you have respectively have had to pay as well. The only difference is that I won’t ever make enough money that can pay back those expenses, simply because BandsOnFire is not a business, but a ministry with no financial income.

To make the project BandsOnFire a reality, I had to take out an interest-free bank loan a couple of years ago. This amount of 5000 Euro I need to pay back until the end of August 2010. If I can’t pay it back in time, I will get charged additional interest rates starting September 2010, which would essentially be “money thrown down the drain“, since I wouldn’t have to pay those interest rates when paying back the loan in full before the end of August 2010.

Since my last status report, there have been labels like Come&Live! and bands like Showbread, who have been successfully raising funds for their ministry work. My hope is, that if a label like Come&Live! (who I’ve been heavily promoting on BandsOnFire) or one single band like Showbread can raise such amounts of funds, then BandsOnFire should be able to as well – considering that we’re not dedicated to only one label or genre, but to the whole scene with all its different genres, bands and labels.

If we can’t raise the amount of 5000 Euro by the end of August 2010, I will be forced to give up BandsOnFire entirely and work a full-time job to pay back expenses made for a work that didn’t benefit me personally in the first place. That’s why it really is Life or Death for BandsOnFire.com right now.

My request therefore goes out to every single one of you who has ever benefitted from BandsOnFire in one way or another: Please help to keep this site alive and make it possible that not only I can keep serving you with BandsOnFire, but that it will also be possible that more people can get involved working on the site in the future, so we can serve each other for the sake of the advancement of the Kingdom of God!

If you should think now, “There should be enough people out there that can donate, it’s not my responsibility“, then be advised that this is the wrong approach. The question is not if you can donate, the question is if you want, because in reality we all can if we really want to. If every visitor of BandsOnFire would donate, then the goal could easily be met. The question is only: Do you want to keep BandsOnFire alive? Do you want to see the site growing to a point where we can meet your needs and (music-) tastes even better? I know I want to see this growth, and I hope you do too!

Before I tell you how you can contribute financially, I wanted to make sure to let you know that if BandsOnFire was lacking coverage of certain bands or genres in the recent past, then this was not on purpose. If anything, leaving out certain bands from coverage was only the result of lack of health and finances (and in turn available time) on my part; and because of the technical limitations of the current site. However, from my work these past years you know how much I care about the visual and content-related aspects of BandsOnFire, therefore you can be sure that the new site will bring everything to the next level in terms of usability, design, and everything else that we all find important regarding our personal favorite music.

Taking a line from our current front-page feature, I pray that I can work together with you so that BandsOnFire (which right now is “the powerless Reiss“ = me) may become “The Powerless RISE“, so that Jesus may be glorified!

Status Update - June 26, 2010

I wanted to give you all a status update on the donations and the webmaster situation: I’ve meanwhile found a new webmaster and we are currently working on the relaunch, so you can expect the new site to be online before the end of August 2010. This means BandsOnFire.com will not disappear but continue on, so your vitally needed donations are/ will not be "in vain“!

However, to avoid the situation that I will have to pay (unnecessary) interest rates after August 2010 ("money thrown down the drain"), we still need to raise the total amount of 5000 Euro before the end of August 2010. Otherwise the financial burden will ultimately crush my efforts to keep the site alive.

Up to this point 40 people from the U.S., Canada, Germany, Australia, Netherlands, Great Britain, Austria, New Zealand and Spain have donated a total amount of 1500 Euro. The highest single donations were 200 USD from Canada and 157 Euro from Germany. If every visitor of BandsOnFire would donate, then the goal could easily be met, so the question still is: Do you want to keep BandsOnFire alive?

In addition to your vitally needed donations you can also help by sharing this matter with your friends and spreading the word through  Facebook , Twitter , MySpace  etc. For graphics to use and more info on that please see above!

Status Update - July 26, 2010



 

 

Hallo Freunde,

hier der Tobe (ausgesprochen Toby), Inhaber und Chefredakteur von BANDSONFIRE.COM – mit ganzem Namen Tobias Reiß. Ich wohne in Nürnberg und werde diesen Juli 27 Jahre alt. Wie die meisten von Euch wissen, betreibe ich diese Website seit dem Jahr 2005 komplett alleine. Für die letzten fünf Jahre war ich für alles, was Ihr auf der Seite gesehen oder gelesen habt, verantwortlich, und für mehr als sechs Jahre habe ich es zu meiner ersten Priorität gemacht, diese Website nicht nur online zu halten, sondern sie auch so gut wie es mir menschlich möglich war, wachsen zu sehen.

In diesem Zeitraum habe ich für die Seite viel geopfert und aufgrund der Zeit, die es benötigte BandsOnFire aufzubauen, bin ich nicht den üblichen Weg von Ausbildung, Studium oder Beruf gegangen. Statt eines Vollzeitjobs oder Vollzeitstudiums habe ich meinen ganzen Fokus darauf gelegt, BandsOnFire zu etablieren und mich mit Teilzeitjobs über Wasser gehalten, sehr ähnlich zu Touring-Bands – mit dem einen Unterschied, dass ich leider keine Leute „on the road“ treffen konnte, so wie es die Bands, die ich promotet habe, taten. Im Glauben daran, dass meine Arbeit mit BandsOnFire Euch allen im persönlichen Leben helfen würde, habe ich über die Jahre hinweg all mein Geld und all meine Zeit in die Arbeit mit der Seite investiert.

Wenn ihr Euch an mein Status-Update von Oktober 2009 erinnert, war es zu diesem Zeitpunkt notwendig – um nicht zu sagen ’lange überfällig’ – einen neuen Webmaster zu finden, um BandsOnFire in technischer Sicht auf das nächste Level zu bekommen. Auch wenn ich seitdem einen sehr qualifizierten und engagierten Helfer gefunden habe, war es bisher leider nicht möglich, die nötigen Fortschritte in Richtung eines Relaunchs der Seite zu machen. Der Plan war ursprünglich, Euch zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt eine komplett neu designte und neu strukturierte Seite zu präsentieren, um zu zeigen was Ihr von BandsOnFire in der Zukunft erwarten könnt. Leider konnte dies aber bis dato nicht realisiert werden und lag außerhalb meiner Kontrolle. Aufgrund dieser Situation suche ich daher nun einen neuen hauptverantwortlichen Frontend-Developer der nicht nur ’on fire’ ist, sondern auch ab sofort Zeit investieren kann um mit mir langfristig an der Seite zu arbeiten. Wenn Du glaubst diese Person zu sein oder jemanden kennst, der in Frage kommen würde, bitte kontaktiere mich!

Das Jahr 2010 schreibend, bin ich persönlich nun an einem Punkt, den man sehr wohl mit „am Ende meiner Kräfte“ bezeichnen kann. Ich habe mein absolut Bestes gegeben, die finanzielle Belastung für die Arbeit mit BandsOnFire zu tragen, und dabei stets das Ziel, Euch allen mit der Seite zu dienen, als meine erste Priorität gesetzt und versucht die Seite so aktuell wie möglich zu halten. Über die Jahre hinweg habe ich finanzielle Auslagen gehabt, die gleichgesetzt werden können mit Ausbildungskosten, welche die Mehrheit von euch ebenfalls aufbringen muss bzw. musste. Der einzige Unterschied liegt darin, dass ich zu keinem Zeitpunkt genug Geld verdienen kann um diese Auslagen zurückzahlen zu können, schlicht und einfach weil BandsOnFire kein Geschäftsbetrieb ist, sondern ein geistlicher Dienst ohne finanzielle Einnahmen.

Um das Projekt BandsOnFire Realität werden zu lassen, musste ich vor ein paar Jahren einen zinslosen Kredit aufnehmen. Diesen Betrag von 5000 Euro muss ich bis Ende August 2010 zurückzahlen. Wenn ich diesen nicht rechtzeitig zurückzahlen kann, werden mir ab September 2010 zusätzliche Zinsen berechnet, welche im Grunde „aus dem Fenster geworfenes Geld“ wären, da ich diese nicht zahlen müsste wenn der Kredit in voller Summe vor Ende August 2010 zurückgezahlt werden würde.

Seit meinem letzten Statusupdate gab es Labels wie Come&Live! und Bands wie Showbread, die erfolgreich finanzielle Mittel für ihren geistlichen Dienst sammeln konnten. Meine Hoffnung ist, wenn ein Label wie Come&Live! (welches ich auf BandsOnFire stark promotet habe) oder eine einzelne Band wie Showbread solche Beträge zusammen bekommen können, dann sollte dies auch für BandsOnFire möglich sein – wenn man bedenkt, dass wir nicht nur für ein Label oder ein bestimmtes Genre engagiert sind, sondern für die komplette Szene mit all ihren verschieden Genres, Bands und Labels.

Wenn wir den Betrag von 5000 Euro bis Ende August 2010 nicht zusammen bekommen können, werde ich gezwungen sein BandsOnFire komplett aufzugeben und einen Vollzeitjob anzunehmen, um Ausgaben für einen Dienst zurückzahlen zu können, welcher mir von vornherein keinen reellen persönlichen Nutzen gebracht hat. Aus diesem Grund geht es im Moment für BandsOnFire.com um Leben und Tod.

Meine Bitte richtet sich daher an jeden Einzelnen von Euch dem BandsOnFire jemals auf irgendeine Art und Weise von Nutzen war: Bitte helft, die Seite am Leben zu halten und ermöglicht es, dass nicht nur ich Euch mit BandsOnFire weiterhin dienen kann, sondern das es auch möglich wird, dass in Zukunft noch mehr Leute bei BandsOnFire mitarbeiten können, um einander für das Vorankommen von Gottes Reich dienen zu können!

Wenn Du jetzt denken solltest „Da sollte es genügend Leute geben, die spenden können. Das ist nicht meine Aufgabe“, dann lass Dir gesagt sein, dass dies der falsche Ansatz ist. Die Frage ist nicht ob Du spenden kannst, die Frage ist ob Du willst, denn in Wirklichkeit können wir alle wenn wir wirklich wollen. Wenn jeder Besucher von BandsOnFire spenden würde, könnte das Ziel ohne Probleme erreicht werden. Die Frage ist nur: Willst Du, dass BandsOnFire am Leben bleibt? Willst Du die Seite weiter wachsen sehen, bis zu einem Punkt wo wir Deinen Bedürfnissen und Deinem (Musik-)Geschmack noch besser begegnen können als bisher, sogar mit einer komplett deutschsprachigen Version der Seite? Ich weiss ich möchte dieses Wachstum sehen, und ich hoffe Du tust das auch!

Bevor ich Euch erkläre wie Ihr BandsOnFire finanziell unterstützen könnt, möchte ich sicherstellen, das Ihr wisst, dass fehlende Berichterstattung über bestimmte Bands oder Genres auf BandsOnFire in der jüngeren Vergangenheit nicht absichtlich war. Im Gegenteil, das „Fehlen“ von bestimmten Bands und Releases war allein mangelnder Gesundheit und fehlenden Finanzen – und damit der verfügbaren Zeit – meinerseits geschuldet; wie auch den technischen Einschränkungen der Seite. Trotz alledem wisst ihr aber von meiner Arbeit über die vergangenen Jahre, wie viel mir an den optischen und inhaltlichen Aspekten von BandsOnFire gelegen ist. Daher könnt ihr sicher sein, dass die neue Version der Seite hinsichtlich Benutzerfreundlichkeit, Design und allem anderen was ein jeder von uns in Bezug auf seine persönlich favorisierte Musik als wichtig empfindet, BandsOnFire auf das nächste Level bringen wird. Ein erklärtes Ziel ist es dabei auch, BandsOnFire komplett in deutscher Sprache an den Start zu bringen.

Bezugnehmend auf eine Zeile von unserem aktuellen Frontpage-Feature bete ich deshalb, dass ich mit Euch so zusammen arbeiten werden kann, dass BandsOnFire (bestehend momentan nur aus „the powerless Reiss“, sprich mir) „The Powerless RISE“, ein „Emporkommen der Schwachen“, werden möge – auf dass Jesus verherrlicht werde!
